What does a Decapping Pin Do – And Where Can You Get a Replacement?

This article explains the role of the decapping pin in the reloading process — what it does, why it matters, and how to know when it needs replacing. We’ll also cover where to find replacement decapping pins, including RCBS options built for reliability and long-term use.

Whether you’re troubleshooting a broken pin or just stocking up on spares, this guide will point you in the right direction.

What Does a Decapping Pin Do?

During the reloading process, think of decapping as de-priming. Decapping removes the spent primer from your fired case. The decapping pin itself is there to clear the flash hole and push the spent primer out of the primer pocket of the case.

Decapping pins are an important part of any style of sizing die or dedicated decapping die. The decapping pin is located at the end of the decapping rod, or decap unit, in the center of the die.

How does a Decapping Pin Work?

Upon raising the fired case into the sizing die, the decapping rod assembly enters the mouth of the case with the dapping pin at the end of the decapping rod. The decapping pin then enters the flash hole at the bottom of the case and pushes the spent primer out of the primer pocket.

Are Decapping Pins Universal?

No. Due to the many different sizes of cartridges and primers/primer pockets, RCBS sells five different sizes of decapping pins, covering a huge range of cartridges from extra-small to large.

Decapping Pin vs Decapping Unit?

Decap units include an expander rod, expander ball and the decapping pin itself. They are used in sizing dies to de-prime the case and expand the case neck in bottleneck cartridges.

What if I Break a Pin? Can I replace the Decapping pin in my die?

Decapping pins are removeable and replaceable. In the event of a decapping pin becoming bent or broken, a spare pin – or a whole decap unit – can be sourced directly from RCBS.

How do I Know if I Need a New Decapping Pin?

Most handloaders replace their pins once the pin breaks or bends – trust us, you’ll know! That said, it’s important to inspect your die and decapping rod/pin for wear and tear. If you notice nics, dings, a slight bend or curve to your pin, it’s time to replace. Don’t worry, pin replacement is quick and cheat.
