Uniflow Powder Measure — Troubleshooting

The Uniflow Powder Measure is a reliable workhorse, but like any precision tool it can be thrown off by powder type, residue buildup, or static. Below are the four most common issues and how to resolve them.

1
Inconsistent Weights with Extruded Powders

Probable Cause

Powder packing in the hopper during operation.

Solution

Keep handle movement smooth — avoid banging or tapping at the top or bottom of the stroke. Use the appropriate cylinder and metering screw for the charge weights being thrown. Adding a powder baffle can also help regulate powder flow from the hopper.

2
Handle Sticking While Dropping a Charge

Probable Cause

Extruded powder grains are being cut as the cylinder rotates past its fill point.

Solution

Switch to a smaller-grained powder if possible. Keep handle movement as smooth and consistent as possible to reduce grain shearing.

3
Powder Sticking to the Hopper

Probable Cause

Static electricity is present — either in the hopper or in the powder itself.

Solution

Wipe the inside and outside of the hopper with an antistatic dryer sheet (such as Bounce). If the static appears to be coming from the powder, the same treatment to the hopper surfaces will help dissipate the charge.

4
Handle Binding When Lifting to Receive Charge

Probable Cause

The cylinder is dirty with accumulated powder residue.

Solution

Remove the cylinder and clean both the cylinder and the casting thoroughly with a good solvent. Make sure the solvent you use does not leave a residue behind, as this can attract more powder buildup over time.

General Maintenance Tip Regular cleaning is the best prevention. A cylinder cleaned after every few sessions will resist residue buildup and keep throws consistent — especially when working with finer extruded powders.
