Product Tips & Troubleshooting
Trim Pro‑2 — Universal Shell Holder Tension
Tips for the Best Tension on Your Cartridge
- ▸ Always make sure the knurling behind the jaws is brushed out and completely free of brass shavings or debris. Build-up here is one of the most common causes of inconsistent tension.
- ▸ The Universal Jaws are manufactured with a chamfer on one side (see photo below). That chamfered side grips the extractor groove of the cartridge, while the flat side seats against the knurling. If the jaws are worn, over-chamfered, or installed incorrectly, you may experience the brass popping out during trimming.
- ▸ Smaller cartridges have a smaller diameter held by the jaws, which means there's more flex in the shell holder. If there aren't 7 washers in good condition — facing the correct orientation inside the Universal Shell Holder Assembly — the case may spin rather than trim cleanly.

Adjusting Tension for Larger Cartridges
Some cartridges may seem too large for the standard jaw setup. Common examples include the .338 Lapua Magnum — due to its thick rim — and the .45-70 Gov't — due to the larger case head diameter. For these, you'll need to remove one of the 7 washers from the Universal Shell Holder Assembly.

Step-by-Step: Removing a Washer
-
Remove the Trim Pro-2 from the Bench Turn the unit on its side to access the underside of the assembly.
-
Remove the Socket Head Cap Screw Using an allen wrench, remove the Socket Head Cap Screw (10-32 × 1/8) holding the Universal Shell Holder onto the casting. The red arrows indicate where the casting is mounted to the bench — the single red arrow is on the same side as the Universal Shell Holder Assembly. The blue arrows indicate the 10-32 × 1/8 socket head cap screws that secure both the Universal Shell Holder Assembly (left) and the Cutter Guide (right).
-
Remove the Button Head Cap Screw and Handle Support Remove the button head cap screw (10-32 × 3/8) from the handle support, then take the support off the assembly.
-
Remove the Hex Nuts and Spring Holder Remove the Hex Nuts (10-32) — indicated by the green arrows in the photo — and slide the Spring Holder off the rest of the Assembly to expose the 7 disc washers inside.

-
Slide the Washers Out Place a flat-head screwdriver in the center of the 7 Disc Washers inside the Spring Holder. Turn the Spring Holder upside down so the washers slide onto the screwdriver shaft (as shown in the photo below).
-
Remove One Washer and Verify Orientation Take out one washer. Before reassembling, confirm the remaining washers are stacked in the correct alternating orientation (bow up, bow down, repeat — last washer bow down).
-
Reassemble in Reverse Order Place the washers back into the Spring Holder and reassemble all components in the reverse order of disassembly.
