Bottleneck Sizer Die — KISS Sizing for Two-Die Sets

01

Full Length Sizing

The full length sizer die will be stamped "FL" on the top. Place the shell holder in the ram of the press and move the ram all the way up. Screw the sizer die down until it touches the shell holder, then lower the ram and continue screwing the die down another 1/8 to 1/4 turn.

The resistance you feel is normal and will not hurt the press — it simply removes the play from the press linkage and gives you the full benefit of the sizer die. Start with 1/4 turn and test whether the sized brass slips into the chamber and allows the action to close. If it's still a little tight, go down another 1/4 turn. Once the brass chambers easily, set your die lock ring. The full-length sizer die is now set.

Lubrication Tip Always lube the bottom 2/3 of the brass for full length sizing. Twirl a case neck brush over the lube pad and work it inside the case mouth — this allows the expander ball to move through the neck more easily.

02

Partial Sizing

Partial sizing uses the full length sizer die. With the ram at the top of the press, screw the die down to touch the shell holder, then back the die up toward the ceiling approximately 1/4 turn. Because the die will still make some body contact with the case, lubrication is still required.

Place the brass in the shell holder and pull the handle. Examine the neck of the case to see where sizing stops. Adjust the die up or down until you're either bumping the shoulder or sizing enough of the neck to hold the bullet securely. Size several cases and chamber each one to confirm that partial sizing works in your specific rifle before proceeding.

03

Neck Sizing

A neck sizing die will be stamped "Neck" on the top. Because the neck sizer does not contact the body of the case, lubrication on the bottom 2/3 is not required — however, the inside of the case neck should still be lubed for the expander ball.

Place the shell holder in the ram and run the ram all the way to the top. Screw the neck sizer down until it touches the shell holder, then lower the ram and adjust the die 1/8 to 1/4 turn past the shell holder. You'll feel the same resistance as full length sizing — this takes the play out of the press and allows you to fully capture the neck for consistent bullet tension.

Size about 5 cases and chamber each one in your rifle before seating any bullets.

Pro Tip — Always Chamber Before Loading After sizing, always chamber the case before priming, adding powder, or seating a bullet. If the sized case chambers cleanly, the loaded round will too. Then load one complete round — primer, powder, and bullet — and verify it chambers easily. If you feel resistance after seating the bullet, the fix is almost always in the seater die setup, not the brass itself.
